Our students win CIFE prizes
At the March 2010 CIFE awards ceremony, held in the House of Lords, two Brooke house students received awards from CIFE president, Baroness Perry.
David Ifeanyi Mocha's planned GCE studies in the U.K. were cruelly cut short when he was diagnosed with a malignant disorder which led to surgery to excise and replace part of one of his leg bones with a metal substitute.
He returned, sailed through a Foundation course with 86% overall distinction, and on the basis of his obvious ability was accepted by the University of Birmingham to read Economics.
Complaining and self-pity were luxuries David decided to do without.
(Rose) Nguyen Phuong Thao has won a Cife award for outstanding performance in Mathematics.
Rose, currently reading Economics at King's College, Cambridge, came late to the academic year, arriving in January having turned 16 just two months before. Six months later she disposed of 5 Maths units at 100/100 UMs each and went on the next year to achieve 600/600 in Maths, 594/600 in Further Maths and two more grade As at A2. She persuaded King's to let her read her weakest GCE subject; the one where she only cleared the grade A hurdle by a mere 84 UMs!
