Introduction
A co-educational college in South Kensington with approximately 500 students each year that prepares them for GCSE, A level, Art Pre-Foundation and Oxbridge Entrance. MPW was founded in 1973 and has built up a reputation as a college in which students can enjoy working hard.
Facilities
Classroom teaching (in groups of no more than eight students) is supported by a full range of academic facilities. There are five science laboratories, two IT laboratories, two art rooms, two photography darkrooms, a media studies studio, a pottery studio, a music room, libraries, reading rooms, a canteen and student common rooms. There are audio- visual facilities for Modern Languages, Film Studies, Media Studies and other subjects. Theatre Studies is taught in a specialist studio, which is provided with lighting and sound equipment.
Teaching
MPW offers two year A level courses, one year A level courses, short retake courses and GCSE courses. There are 43 AS and A level subjects available and there are no restrictions on subject combinations. The college also provides specialist preparation for Oxford, Cambridge, art school entry and medical interviews. Each student has a Director of Studies to monitor progress, help with study and revision techniques and to give advice on further education and employment opportunities.
Exam Results
2009 was a record year for MPW with 42 students completing their programme with 3As or better and 70% of all grades achieved were at A or B. Over the past ten years, 14 special commendations have been awarded by the exam boards to MPW students for being placed in the top ten of the national entry in a particular subject.
University entrance
The clear aim of the overwhelming majority of our students is to proceed to a university degree course and the Director of Studies role is to provide the help and guidance necessary to make the most appropriate choices of courses and institutions. We provide mock interviews and interview training where necessary and produce a series of MPW guides, published by Trotman and Co. covering admission to medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, physiotherapy, the media, business and management, art and design, psychology and law.
Activities
Throughout the year MPW offers a variety of extracurricular activities, including football, rugby, basketball, a debating society, a charity fundraising committee, first aid courses, drama and musical productions and a college magazine. The college arranges various trips abroad and is well placed geographically to take advantage of the theatre, museums, opera and academic societies available in London.
Accommodation
MPW's Accommodation and Welfare Department provides students with advice on a range of options from home-stay and studio apartments to student residences. Students are given guidance on an individual basis to ensure their choice of accommodation fits their particular needs. Once accommodated, students receive ongoing help and support whenever required from our dedicated Accommodation and Welfare Officer.
