Introduction
The College was founded in 1981 to provide high quality education in an informal social atmosphere. Students are encouraged to do their best, realise their potential and gain the academic and communication skills necessary for success. They can achieve maturity and social awareness in the friendly environment, supported by well qualified and experienced tutors. Students enjoy being at the college and achieve results better than they originally expected.
Facilities
Classes are small - maximum eight, average four - students. Facilities include science laboratories, library, computer suite with free broadband and wireless access, audio-visual equipment and a student common room with snack facilities. All teaching and examinations take place in the college building, which is located in parkland near the centre of Harrogate.
Teaching
The college offers two-year, eighteen-month and intensive one-year A level courses, one-term A level retake and intensive one-year GCSE courses, Easter and Summer Revision courses at AS, A2 and GCSE. These courses are available in over 30 subjects at A level and over 20 at GCSE. Many of the tutors are also professional examiners and so are fully aware of what is required to achieve high grades.
The college also provides the following support outside subject classes: Study Skills, Pre-Med and work experience, Oxford and Cambridge preparation, Maths for Scientists, detailed help and guidance with the UCAS forms and Careers Advice.
Link Courses for overseas students combine either GCSE, AS or A2 level subjects with English and Study Skills. English as a Foreign Language is taught all year, both as a main and support subject.
University Entrance
Over 90% of the A level students proceed to university. They are given careful advice with their selection of subjects as this affects their choice of degree and university, which are discussed in detail with the Academic Director and their tutors.
Activities
The college is located near the town centre and close to the sports centre. There are college parties, discos, cinema and theatre visits. Students often join local sporting and cultural clubs. There is no dress code and staff and students are on first name terms.
Accommodation
Students who cannot commute stay with carefully selected host families near the college and the Accommodation Officer deals with any problems which may arise. Students have their own room with study facilities and each is treated as an adult member of the family. These families provide half board weekdays and full board weekends, if required.
